Here you can find a range of factsheets to support and inform the activities you are planning for National Men's Health Week. They cover a broad range of subjects and issues, reflecting the nature of NMHW in focusing on men and weight in the broadest sense.

 

1.    About Men’s Health

Please click on the link above for the latest men's health statistics from MHF England. The link will take you to the MHF England website and requires an internet connection.

2.    Men and Women in Scotland - A Statistical Profile

This publication of statistics disaggregated by gender, Men and Women in Scotland : A Statistical Profile, contributes to meeting the commitments which the Scottish Executive gave in the Equality Strategy, published in November 2000, to developing better statistics that provide information for different equality groups. It moves us on from the work done by Engender, in producing, through the efforts of volunteers, 7 editions of the Gender Audit

3.    The National Diet & Nutrition Survey

This survey, of a national sample of adults aged 19–64 years, is one of a programme of national surveys with the aim of gathering information about the dietary habits and nutritional status of the British population. This summary document found at the above link includes the key findings from four previous reports.

4.    The European Commission and Nutrition

This status report on the European Commission’s work in the field of nutrition in Europe was published in October 2002.

 5.       The European Commission and Physical Activity

The pdf found by following the link above provides an overview of the situation relation to physical activity across the European Union. This includes a breakdown of activity by gender.

6.    BMJ collected resources on obesity

Collected resources on obesity from the online British Medical Journal. BMJ collections list the most recent articles from the BMJ and other online journals within the BMJ Publishing group, with specific reference to obesity. Links are provided to the full-text of the document. Links are also provided to related collections, journals, books and reviews.

7.    Childhood obesity

This document, published September 2003 (as postnote 205) by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology, discusses recent trends in childhood obesity, the consequences and causes of obesity, and current policy relating to the prevention and management of obesity.

8.    Obesity and overweight

This brief leaflet about obesity and overweight was produced in 2003 by the World Health Organisation. The document highlights the increasing problem of obesity and being overweight, and discusses why there is an increase in obesity, how obesity and overweight are defined, the extent of the problem, the impact of excess body fat on health, and what can be done to try and combat this problem.

9.     Men and Eating Disorders

This informative document from the Eating Disorders Association (EDA) was produced in 2000, and can be viewed as a text document by clicking on the link above. It focuses on the provision of treatment and services available for men, as well as including an overview of the situation relating to men and eating disorders.

10.    Obesity and diabetes: a heavy burden

This very recent document from Diabetes UK, shows that the UK has the fastest growing rate of obesity in the developed world. The document also explores the link between obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

11.     NHS Direct and Obesity

The link above contains an overview of the: symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of obesity.

12.    The Association for the Study of Obesity

The section of the ASO website contains a number of useful factsheets, which will help inform your work during NMHW2005.

13.   TOAST

The TOAST website has a number of very useful articles, including a good section containing a number of personal stories of weight loss. 

14.    The Counterweight Programme

This document from the Counterweight Programme outlines the current approaches to obesity management in UK in Primary Care.
