Information on viewing PDF documents

Some of the materials you will find on this CD require Adobe® Acrobat Reader™. This is free software you can download by clicking on the box below. Documents which require Adobe® Acrobat Reader™ are shown with the symbol

 

 

If nothing appears in the window when you open a PDF document, check that Adobe Reader is configured to open in your internet browser. Open Adobe Reader and select "Preferences..." from either the  File or Edit Menu depending on the version of Adobe Reader you have installed. Then make sure the check box for "Display PDF in browser" is filled. In Adobe Reader 6.0 you will find this check box by selecting "Internet" from the right hand list in the dialogue box.

This CD is designed to work with Internet Explorer. When it opens, it launches Internet Explorer in "kiosk mode". This means that you don't see any toolbars. Use the link buttons to navigate around the CD. If you want to close it at any time you can either press the link to the Main Page, which appears in the bar at the bottom of every page, and press the button at the bottom of the Main or Home page "Close this CD Resource" or you can simply press "Alt+F4" on your keyboard at any time. This will exit the application.

I can't find a page I was looking at previously

At the bottom of each page you will find a link button to take you to the "Site Map" - all the pages are listed here and you can simply click on the link to take you to the page you are looking for

How does the "UP" link button work?

The pages in this resource are arranged in layers, like a flowchart. Pressing the "UP" button takes you back up a level. The highest level is the Home Page, with all the other pages in layers below.

Some of the documents stored on this CD are in PDF format, which means that you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to view them. For more information on this, or to download the Reader, go to the Main Page where you will find a scroll box with links and details

In order to listen to the sound files on this CD you must have a Media Player, such as Windows Media Player, or Real Player installed. For more information on this, or to download the Player, go to the Main Page where you will find a scroll box with links and details

If you have a player installed and you cannot hear anything, make sure your speakers are connected and you system volume is correctly adjusted. You can also adjust the volume from the player

I clicked on a link to a PowerPoint Presentation, and a dialogue box asked if I want to open it or save it - what should I do?

If you want to view it immediately, click "Open". If you want to save it to your hard disk to view later, click "Save".

All the files on this disk have been scanned for viruses using the latest definitions prior to publication.

I clicked on a link to a PowerPoint Presentation, but it opened in Internet Explorer. What should I do?

You can view the presentation by using the up and down arrows on your keyboard as normal, or you can use the scroll bar at the side of the page. If you want to view it using PowerPoint, first save it to your hard drive, then open the file in PowerPoint.

If you click on a link to an external website, you must be connected to the internet in order to view it. Ensure that you are connected and able to access the web.

I want to save a file to my computer - how do I do it?

For most files, right click the link which takes you to the file and select "Save Target As..." A dialogue box will then open asking where you want to save it. Specify a location and click "Save"

I can't see the full page on my screen

This resource is designed to be viewed best at screen resolution of 1280x1024. However, it should be easily seen on most standard monitors at other resolutions. Use the scroll bars to move the page to the best position for what you want to see.

The video and sound files on this CD are in various formats, including *.wma, *.wmv and *.mpeg. If you are having problems viewing or listening to any of these files, make sure you have the latest version of your media player installed.
