What is National Men's Health Week?

National Men’s Health Week (NMHW) runs each year in the week leading up to father’s day.  2009 will run between 15th June - 21st June with the theme being ‘men and risk ’.

The main purpose of NMHW is to raise the profile of men’s health.  It is hoped to change men’s health-related behaviour, not least in terms of increasing their willingness to access health care and reducing the risks they take with their health, but also to promote men’s awareness of wider lifestyle issues that can have an impact on health.

What will happen during National Men's Health Week?

During NMHW, local men’s health events and initiatives on a wide range of issues will take place throughout Scotland.  These events will be organised by NHS Boards, health promotion units, hospitals, local authorities, schools, colleges, voluntary groups, charities, employers, commercial organisations and many other groups and individuals.

The events will not only directly reach individual men but also generate local and regional media coverage.  The kind of events that can be expected to be taking place will include holding men’s ‘MOTs” or health checks, physical activities, information displays, workshops and alternative therapies.

How do Men's Health Forum Scotland support NMHW?

Every year MHFS produce a newsletter and a directory of events that are happening across Scotland which is then distributed to everyone on our mailing list.  There will be a pdf version available on our website.

MHFS will be organising the 4th 10k for Men which takes place on father's day every year.  This provides a major focus for NMHW and brings together men from across Scotland and beyond and we hope that this will be a major annual date for both men's health and running in Scotland.  For more information about the 10k for Men go to www.mhfs.org.uk/10k08

More information about our activities will be posted nearer the time.

Do MHFS provide printed resources for events taking place during NMHW?

No, MHFS is a registered charity therefore has limited resources for printed materials to support other organisations during NMHW.

Where can I get resources for my event?

We would advise that you contact your local health promotion department or various health charities, for example The Prostate Cancer Charity would be able to supply you with leaflets etc.  Our website has various web links to organisations who deal with specific health topics - MHFS links page

You could also look at getting health professionals involved in your event, for example your local NHS Board or Community Health Parternship.

Men's Health Forum England and Wales have produced a web based resource pack which gives you all sorts of information - Brian Haynes Mini Manuals, fact sheets, research, how to run successful events.  You can access last year's resource pack via our website through the link provided - Resource Pack
